In the Company of Small Things

Buda Historic Home and Garden, 42 Hunter Street, Castlemaine, Victoria
March 21-May 18, 2026

Buda exhibition: Dianne Longley’s site-specific exhibition explores Buda Historic Home and Garden as a location for inspiration and imagination, investigating the layers and traces of the Leviny family who lived creative and intellectually curious lives in the historic homestead. Through a process of close observation and reinterpretation, Longley has photographed architectural details capturing the worn surface details that evidence the passage of time. Onto these abstracted compositions she overlays traceries of drawings derived from the Leviny sisters’ journals and design fragments from Buda’s permanent collection of art and craft objects, revealing a layered dialogue between image, memory, and place. Other works have 1940s patterned and worn linoleum as the ground upon which Longley’s characters inhabit narratives of quiet resilience, and imaginative interior worlds.
Another aspect of the exhibition is the installation of small works by Longley alongside or adjacent to objects d’art displayed in the Buda collection. Her small artworks including miniature drawings, bronze plant forms, and on-glaze porcelain works will be found by inquisitive visitors to Buda Historic Home.

Redux: Dianne Longley & Olga Sankey a survey exhibition curated by Dr Thomas Middlemost.
Together, Longley and Sankey have created separate, dedicated bodies of work that speak not only to their technical mastery of printmaking, particularly digital print techniques from the 2000s onwards, but also to their shared, however separate, journeys as artists.

Publications on the exhibition (Dr Thomas Middlemost) and the artists’ work (Sasha Grishin AM, FAHA) will be launched in 2026.

Emporium

Artpuff Gallery, 38/1-9 Walker Street, Castlemaine, Victoria
February 24-March 20, 2022

‘Emporium’ at Artpuff is an exhibition of assorted and eclectic mixed media works. Dianne is fascinated by the possibilities inherent in a range of techniques and processes. Themes of the curious and the grotesque are central to many of her works, as are symbolic references to chance and change. Dianne’s explorations at Artpuff range from finely detailed works on wooden panels, hand-crafted prints to mixed media cyanotypes.
